making :: big wheel
It was red and yellow and blue, with big black plastic wheels that made a memorable sound when dragged across the nubby cement sidewalk. I sat in the early morning lamp-light dark remembering growing up with my "little" brother in the first house we lived in. I can recall just how the orange shag carpet felt and smelled and, disgustingly, how it tasted. The big trees out back became forts and the park next door was any kid's dream come true.
I pulled out my crafting bin from the second bedroom and dug out just the papers I needed. I had fun with the exacto knife - though my skills are on the rougher side of polished. A little stamping finished off the front of the card and I filled the rest with gushy text and memories.
Happy Birthday, Matt!
You know, I never thought about it before you mentioned it, but I can distinctly remember the way the orange shag carpet in MY childhood home smelled. Yuck. And yet simultaneously sweet and awesome. Your writing has such voice and depth and that card is bad ass. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cassadie! Reading back through some of my earlier writing the orange shag carpet plays a prominent role. :) Thanks for the complements on my writing and card.
