Progress to date - Fabrics pulled and whale partially pieced

This little whale paper piecing pattern I designed based on art work I found online is supposed to be a quilt for Ediza. I loved pulling all the blue fabrics I have and arranging them by color/value. Hopefully, when the whale is pieced this will come through. The background of mostly Heather Ross prints makes me very happy too. I'm excited to get back to this one, but need to finish the Bison and Narwhal quilt first.

Progress to date - top 85% pieced

Way back in 2015, Sam asked me to make a quilt using the linens from her wedding. In a show of great procrastination it took me almost a year to come up with a design/plan and another year to start piecing it. When I set aside my sewing time, this is what I'm currently working on. I'm loving these colors together and to me it is feeling very seasonal. I'm looking forward to having this done so I can give it to Sam to enjoy. It's been too long coming.

Progress to date - Top 100% pieced, back partially pieced

Not quite my oldest WIP, but certainly the most colorful. This started as a challenge from the Modern Quilt Guild when I used to go to meetings when we lived on the peninsula. I'm not sure what I'll do with this one when it's complete. That might be way it has sat around for such a long time. Time to get it done and move on.

Progress to date - Blocks from the quilting bee all received

And the longest WIP award goes to... the sea stars quilt! I requested 12.5" blocks in Hope Valley prints way back in June of 2010. The colors reminded me of star fish clinging to rocks on the northern California coast. Seven and a half years later, the blocks are still sitting in a stack waiting for me to do something with them. I was supposed to add a couple of my own, but I think I talked my mom into sewing those for me at some point. There was at least one block I had thoughts of redoing due. I dreamed of making this a bed quilt, but not quite sure the colors would make Lukas happy and now, not sure if it really fits with our room. My plan is to get the blocks pieced together, back it, quilt it, and donate it somewhere.

Progress to date - The body is 95% done

I'm lacking a picture for this one, but I'm adding it to the list as my last work in progress. I've been taking this with me on the bus commute and working here and there on it in the evenings. It's fun to watch it grow, but slightly nerve wracking as I watch the ball of yarn dwindle.

Progress to date - Fabrics pulled and pattern inspiration gleaned

I couldn't help but sign up for the Heather Ross mini quilt swap happening over on Instagram. I really didn't need another project (or two) to be working on, but I couldn't resist. I've pulled some fabrics to make one of my extras for the swap - a banner for keeping cute pins. A glance at my fabric selections below has me thinking it still needs a bit more.

Progress to date - Fabrics pulled and pattern designing happening

The actual mini quilt is also underway for the Heather Ross mini swap. I loved pulling and arranging the fabrics for this one. When I began to sketch my ideas for the pattern I kept stalling and just wanting to go back to the fabrics. I think I'll dive head first into some starting piecing that I can then play around with for layout options. It's fun to imagine what my partner will like (like when I did the Blueberry Park mini swap).

  1. The stacks of fabric in the first picture and the last picture are so lovely. They will make great quilts! I look forward to seeing your progress on them.

  3. You have a great range of projects lined up, looking forward to seeing the progress! It's hard to focus on something when you're not sure about it, and tastes change over the years. I have a quilt I started 5 years ago that is just not me anymore and it continues to sit unfinished!

  4. You have a lot of lovely, vibrant color in your WIPs. I especially love the spectrum of blues in the geo whale fabric pull. Have fun with your projects. :-)

  6. This is a nice batch of projects. Heather Ross prints are terrific, aren't they? I love how the one project is right in with this year's Pantone color. :)
