Ever since I got a journal for my birthday the year I was in first grade, I have been trying to capture the stories of my life. Even before then stories have been how I connect with and make sense of the world. I discovered and fell in love with the world of modern quilting in 2009 when a fabric line and the story it told caught my eye. I just had to make something with it and it felt natural to make a quilt. That first quilt is still the one I sit under on the couch at the end of each day.

Stories Told In Fabric

There are so many ways to capture our stories with a quilt. Often this starts with the fabrics - whether they are from saved baby clothes, clothing from a loved one, vintage finds, new fabrics in prints and colors that are evocative of the memories, or a mix of all these - and builds from there. The quilt design can also be filled with significance. While the story the quilt holds can be very specific, it can also be as simple as a favorite color and as broad as an entire life. When I create quilts for family and friends, I begin with the story. Commissioned quilts begin with the story as well.
