Are you married? ...don't try it!

Today I had an errand to run for work that brought me to Kinko’s Copies.  While I was waiting in line to pickup a poster that I’d had printed up I couldn’t help but notice the older couple in front of me at the counter.  They were being helped by what looked to be the supervisor of the place – at least he was the only one there in a tie while the rest of the employees were in their “nifty” black and purple Kinko’s polos.  This couple appeared to be getting something printed up, maybe address labels and they were deep into the process of picking out a graphic to go on whatever it was that they were having printed.  The women, in pale pink pants and a white cotton t-shirt, was pointing to a print off of tiny pictures she must have brought with her.  “See,” she was saying, “isn’t this one just so much better.”  The supervisor readily agreed but had to inform her that they didn’t have that exact graphic.  The look on her husband’s face quickly told me they’d been going in this circle for quite some time already.  “You have these options here,” the supervisor said, pointing to a gargantuan book.  “There’s this house and this one is very nice too.”  “Well,” the lady responded, “Don’t you think it looks better with the gate in front.  I like the gates in front, don’t you?” she said turning to her husband.  “Sure,” he said.  “They’re all very nice.”  Around in this circle they went again.  “Here,” said the supervisor pointing to the big book, “This one has a nice little picket fence in front.  The all-American dream home.”  At this point the husband glanced my way and gave a little roll of his eyes.  Just another option to choose from, his tired look seemed to say.  Just what we don’t need.  The wife turned to me showing an exasperated look at her husband’s antipathy.  “Why does it even have to be house?  We could pick anything,” she said.  With that the supervisor jumped in again, “Why don’t we take this book over to the side and you can take a few minutes to pick something out that you like?  You can sit down and figure out what you want.”  The wife countered with, “Maybe we’ll need a few hours.”  And her husband followed that up with, “Try a few days, no years.”  As he was turning to walk to join his wife at the table he asked me, “Miss, are you married?”  I smiled, because I could see where this was going and said, “No. I’m not married.”  “Good,” he said.  “Don’t try it.”  And shaking his head he walked over to join his wife a the table where I’m sure they spent many more minutes (but hopefully not months or years) to pick out the perfect graphic.

*I've found that since I have writing I need to do (in the form of a cover letter) other writing ideas are coming out instead.  Just another form of procrastination.

This is my kazoo in first gear

Have you ever been serenaded in a taxicab?  Have you ever been serenaded in a taxicab by a man in a funny hat playing a kazoo?  Well, I’m going to bet your answer will be no unless you were in the cab with me and a couple of my girl friends from college last Friday night.  Our fun little weekend reunion was half over (and just getting started).  We’d seen the Angels bet the Red Sox in fantastic fashion earlier that evening much to the dismay of the sole girl among us who really had a preference of which team won.  And after the game we’d gone out to eat since we’d skipped dinner in our mad rush to the game through stand-still traffic and up a never-ending ramp to our “cheap” seats.  Our weekend was only half over because bright and early (well, that was the plan) we were heading to Disneyland.  But, back to the questions I first posed to you, have you ever been serenaded in a taxicab, by your driver, no less, on a orange colored plastic kazoo?  Well, if that was the question asked in “Never have I ever” I would be down a point because as of Friday night I have been.  The cab pulls up to the curb and the three of us hop in, give the name of our hotel and we’re off.  Seconds later our talkative cabbie pulls a bright orange kazoo from under a rubber band attached to his sun visor.  Then he holds it up to his lips and begins “playing” (is that the right word) Summer Time.  Summer time and the living is easy, fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high, your daddy’s rich and your momma’s good lookin’…Slowly we began to giggle.  Is this guy for real?<  And he was, playing a line on the kazoo and then adlibbing his own words on the next.  When we asked about his kazoo his reply was “This isn’t just any kazoo baaaby”, with an effected drawl.  “You see this cab here.  Well, I could have gone all out and bought a Porsche.  Would have been real nice, nicer than this cab.  But then it would have cost a lot more too.  But instead I got this kazoo.”  And then he played a very convincing engine revving and we busted out laughing.  “And that’s just my kazoo in first gear baby.”

Summer time and the livin' is easy
fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high
your daddy's rich and your momma's good lookin'
So hush little baby don't you cry

Good friends, a little baseball, and a lot of Disneyland

Enjoy a little slide show from this weekend.  More pictures and little descriptions can be found here.  Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  Angles (vs. Rex Sox) game and fireworks, a "night on the town" in Anaheim, Disneyland (till midnight!), Mama Mia, and a little shopping.  Now, I could use another weekend to rest up from all the fun I had.

Say cheese!

I left work at lunch today and hurried home to wait.  I was waiting for the man in the big, brown truck to pull up and stop in front of my house.  And, he did.  Up the steps he came with my new present (purchased with some graduation gifts).  The... Panasonic Lumix TZ5 in blue!!  I love it.  I think it helps that I spent some serious time picking it out and looking over all the different options out there.
Here's my first picture with it.  It's not gonna win any "amazing photo" awards, but it did splendidly.  (Just need to work on not covering the flash while taking self portraits!)  I got it just in time for the super fun weekend that is just about to start.  At the moment I'm waiting for two friends from college to get here.  Then we're off to Anaheim to watch a little baseball.  The match-up is supposed to be pretty awesome and I hear the teams are 2 and 3 on the Power Rankings.  Then a cozy night will be spent in Anaheim and in the morning we're off to the happiest place on Earth!  My roommate's gonna meet up with us and a friend from grad school too.  I can't wait for the weekend to get started.

That's all for now.  I'll be sure to post with pictures from this weekend (with my new camera!).
Have a wonderful weekend!

the nerd in me...

video
I might be the biggest dork on the planet, but I got a kick out off this new "music video".  Maybe other microbiology dorks out there will have a laugh too.  Just had to share - loved the line "it's amazing what heating and cooling and heating will do..."

Enjoy the dorkyness!
*PS. This is my first try at posting a video so who knows if it will work.

this summer morning...

This summer morning I woke up with a start to a car alarm going off.  Is it mine?  Did someone try to break into my car?!  In a flash I was up, out of bed and throwing on a sweatshirt.  And then I stopped.  The sound wasn't coming in the direction of my car (the picture linked isn't my car but it could be it's identical twin), I didn't think.  I listened more closely and really didn't think it was coming from the direction of my car at all.  And, then while I was listening it stopped.  Many normal people would have gotten back into bed at this point, but I started to convince myself again that what if it was my car?  What if?  And since I was up I might as well go check it out.  Well, my car was safe and sound but now I was definitely awake for the day.  Darn it!  It had been my plan to sleep till at least 11:30 because I needed to kill time before I could take a shower.  Our tub had just been re-caulked and it needed to fully dry before we could shower in it.  So, I grabbed some all purpose cleaner (personally, I think my roommate just bought it because it's pink) and headed back out to my car and tackled the years of grime that has built up on the steering wheel and has since been transfered all over the car.  I couldn't get it all off with the environmentally friendly cleaner I had to work with, but it is much improved.  And still, with more time to kill I decided to wash my car.  I've got a good bucket method worked out 'cause we lack a hose - water dumped on first, then soaped with a squishy sponge and that tends to dry before I can get back with a wet towel and then dry towel to finish it all off.  Lastly, I did my hubcaps.  Boy did they need it!  I'd forgotten they were actually silver and not matt-black.  Now my car sparkles and it was in more of a need of a shower than before.  A quick breakfast of apples and pepper jack cheese later I finally got my shower.  And now... I'm sitting in front of the big open window at our new cutesy "bistro" set and listening to someone playing beautiful piano music upstairs.  Enjoying the fresh air and the feeling of getting something done and earning my time to relax.  In a few moments I should go brush my hair out and make a grocery shopping list, but for now I'll just sit here and take is this summer morning.
